Must haves... what is essential

ok the big day has arrived. Ive got $3,417 in the bank. with $700 more owed to me, and about to be "collected" by any means necessary. Aside from good tripod, and a case , what is essential to have. you know thoes little thigns noone thinks of when they buy somethign new.
(if you have any suggestions for good tripod feel free to tell, willing to spend up to $400)

Re: Must haves... what is essential

Forget the stuff. What's essential is your eye. Spend your money renting films and studying them. Figure out what movies have won awards for best cinematography and watch and study them. When you have that ingrained in your mind, then worry about the "stuff".

Too much emphasis is spent on accessorizing cameras and not enough emphasis is placed on technique. Be passionate. The DVX is capable of great things in the right hands with minimal accessories.

Not the answer I'm sure you were looking for but the truth from where I stand nonetheless.

Re: Must haves... what is essential

I can't agree anymore strongly with disjecta. "Learning" through any means possible is far more valuable then owning a steady cam or green screen etc etc.
However, one accessory that would be worth your time is a Clear UV Filter to protect your lenses IMHO. Other than that you sound like your all set.

(but I'm a beginner, so I'd get a few more responses)

Good luck and let us all know when you get your equipment !

As can be attested to here, I made my first (very) short film within three days of having my dvx. and all I had was my UV Protective Lens. (although I did wish I had a tripod) ;D

x2mag68 is peddling dope to pay for his camera! ;)

I agree with dis and thistle. Some of the best practice (and most fun) is to take a scene from a movie that you really like and reinact it. Try to get the camera moves down to a T.

Other than the UV filter, get some batteries from Jarred, so you'll have plenty of time to practice. Get plenty of MQ tapes when you order the cam. As for the tripod, get somee Bogen sticks with a 503 head (or 501 if budget won't allow for 503.)

Now get shootin!

Re: Must haves... what is essential

that sounds perfect. UV filter good .. scratched leica glass bad. and batteries! i totally for got about spare batteries

Yea i am a big believer in practice makes perfect, i already have statred doing drills. i start on my stomach on the ground, then the drill instructor throws a 4 pund weight up in the air, i have to be able to stand up before it falls to catch it, then put it to my eye. then my drill sergent hits me with tripod legs if i drop the "weight".

and no i dont peddle drugs, drugs are bad kids, i just hurt people for other people. or at least say nasty thigns to their faces....... for pay.

But thanks alot. i didint think i needed much, but like i thought maybe like an external battery charger or something of the like to make life easier.

What's with this guy? Throwing in advertising in a bunch of posts so far... ::)

Re: Must haves... what is essential

Order Barry's Book & DVD. Order Art History. I got it today and it is a great learning tool. You can get a decent tripod for under $200.00 from Manfrotto/Bogen. Some tapes and just start shooting.

yes barry's guide! great idea. Will order it soon

Re: Must haves... what is essential

how about dvxuser's own 3500mah li-ion batteries? i got two of them and i'm very pleased so far. i also have a glidecam 2000 pro that i purchased a couple years ago and i've gotten a lot of great use out of it with my sony consumer camcorder. (i've only done two projects with the DVX100a and glidecam but the results are super).

Re: Must haves... what is essential

a very good freind of mine has a glidecam. he saidi can use it when ever i want. I just wonder if he has all the counter weights.

Re: Must haves... what is essential

and yes, the DVXuser batteries are a must cause they are a GREAT deal. I wonder how they get them. are they generic brand that fits a Dvx? or panasonic rejects with cosmetic flaws? they seem really cheap, i paid 75 for the 4 hour battery on my Trv-70.... so 45 seems liek a steal.

Re: Must haves... what is essential

nm, i just looked at the oredering page, they are custom.
