Musket Smoke???

I need practical musket smoke for a single shot in a Civil War film I'm going to be shooting. (They were very smokey guns) Anybody have any ideas for creating this effect? Don't need to see it emanate from the barrel per se. You will hear the shot, then it cuts to the shooter with a cloud of smoke wafting away in the wind. Using a replica gun but it has no firing capabilities. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. T

Maybe canned smoke, fill the gun with it, plug it up. Then when you're ready have the actor pull the plug and the smoke will waft out.

Diffusion in a can isn't going to be smokey enough, especially while shooting outdoors. You may want to see if you can get some smoke powder somewhere.

Use smoking gunpowder. Not the smokeless stuff used today. Contact a civil war re-enactment group. They should have some. If not, then a gun shop should have it. Ask them how to flash it off so you don't hurt yourself.

You could composite in an effects plate of real smoke. Burn green leaves at night to create smoke, illuminate the smoke with a small light, luma key out the dark background and presto, you have your smoke effect.
