Musical Scores for Film Production

Hi folks,

I was wondering if anyone knows or can point me to where I can get CD's/Softwares for music and sound fx to add to my film.

I've been reading up on Pro Scores...but it seems like it's limited to be used with certain other softwares only. I want something I can create music scores with any sound software I like, for instance Garage Band, Sonic Forge, etc...

thanx!!

PC or Mac?

I believe there is a package for scoring from Sony. "Cinescore" maybe? You can buy it alone, or it comes with some PC Vegas,ACID, DVD package.

In reality you need someone who scores. That's the only way to have the music really match the film.

You're using scores in a way that won't help your searching. Although many people call the composed music for a production "the score" they usually mean the music that has been converted to sheet music, or at least musical notation. So maybe "Soundtrack" would help you better.

You can get all sorts of useful components to help you. It's possible to get what often get called 'stems' - short pastiches of really common components - think the psycho violin stabs, short major an minor string chords, that kind of thing that have amazing quality, but you can't simply make new proper compositions.

Sequencers are most useful, but make video editing software look easy. Garage Band is one of these, but one designed to produce music from very simple elements, and is quite basic. The industry heavyweights are Steinberg and Apple - PC and Mac specific, like video.

I've been a Steinberg user for years and the quality and cleverness of some of the add on instruments really does help. Once you know the software, amazing sounds come out for not too much input. Cheaper or 'Lite' versions rarely have this ability and the cost of software instruments in pretty expensive - and many are really processor and storage intensive - as in coming with 6-8 DVDs full of the samples.

You might find a local college who do music technology, who may have students who can produce good stuff in response to a brief?

SFX wise, there are plenty around - both sides of the water. Hollywood Edge is one of my favourites. Do a google for that and have a listen.

Hey paulears, when you say "Soundtrack" are you referring to the app "Soundtrack Pro" that comes with Final Cut Studio?

I too am a Steinberg lover. I have used Nuendo for years, and have moved to Cubase on my Mac system. I wish I could get WaveLab on Mac, not to mention ACID.

One note - It is common to use the term "score" when referring to any music created for a film. A "soundtrack" is usually any songs already recorded that get put into a film. Yes a "score" is also the written music of a musical piece, but I have scored films with original music and not used sheet music.

Call me crazy, but you could also work with a composer for music. There seems to be a constant stream showing up around here who just can't wait to get their hands on a film.

I am one such composer who is looking for films to score. Let me know if you want me to write some music for you!
