Hey
Could any one you DVX gods that have produced music videos tell me what is a good price for a music video?
Now I know I am just a beginner in this but I have been in the radio industry for at least 6 years and know some what of that end of the business.
I kind of want to know what a beginner price would be to what the big guys charge.
Remember these are just local bands and are trying to promote themselves. Hoping to hit the big time.
Any advice on Contract, Cost, and fees that might come up.

Thanx
Bryster

(But experience is invaluable!)

John

That is cool... You sound like me. I know I will not be able to charge till I know what I am doing... This is why the question.
If the band uses it for promotion I want to know where I stand. I plan on no up front cost unless they plan on using it for promotion. I am advertising in a local recording/Music Center. I know most band would jump at a chance like this.
I already have done one music video and had so much fun doing it. I know the more I do the more I will know. just thought I would start asking questions.
You know this place rocks for networking information.
The only equipment I have is the camera, and tripod along with an audio package of a wireless lav, 3 hand-held, 1 wired lav, 1200w lighting kit w\reflectors, track and dolly, camera stabilizer, 13' crane, and car mount.
John (or anyone) if you could give any insight on your MV, that would be cool. John I thought you did a great job!

Re: Music Videos! What is a good price?

Tks Bryster (It wasnt just me! Exfilms directed and Dan Lahav did DP as well). Im sure someone can come in a give a good quote...

But I would definatley charge in the realm of:

FOOD BEING SUPPLIED TO YOU
This means coffee, bagels, pizza for lunch!

The DVX renst for what, 175 a day? I charge for this

Tapes
Probally go through 1, maybe 2? I d charge for that (You using MQ's?)

I'd also factor in "What your time is worth?" Are just shooting? Directing? Editing?

The days shoot wont end for you if you are going to end up doing all the POST work..

Furthermore, if you are Directing, your time is valubable in pre-production as well.

I'd charge:

$1000 ? ? ?

Anyone?

Re: Music Videos! What is a good price?

Im trying to get into that myself. I shot a music video for my friends... no charge, but a lot of people are impressed with it and I've had a couple of bands say that they would pay me to do one for them. Im a few weeks away from the DVX. :P

Re: Music Videos! What is a good price?

Let me know how it goes. I have had my DVX since Dec. and have only been doing Weddings and Corporate DVD's. That is what has been my bread and butter. I did a music video for some elementary kids, and had so much fun doing it. I would really like it to be one of my main stay's.

John.. $1000 is the figure I was thinking. Thanks for the comments.

Tell me. During the day of production was there any thing you would have done different?
Let me know

Anyone else have any more info?

Re: Music Videos! What is a good price?

I could be way off; I was just thinking if I was offering to do a music video (while obviously still building my reel and not being Mark Romanek). Seems fair to me and everything is negotiable!

I'd ask for a portion up front (10% OR EVEN hALF!)

Good luck!

Re: Music Videos! What is a good price?

Nice job! This is a good example of using what you have. This looks really good! The groove was kind of cool; I lliked the music. Wow. cant wait to see your DVX work! :)

Outstanding Michael!!..makes me want to drag my old Bolex double8 out of the closet! Keep up the great work!

Re: Music Videos! What is a good price?

Above the line crew such as producer or director usually make a percentage of the budget. Say 10-15%...so on a normal music video budget of $50k-100k you could get up to $15k for directing. That is until you are well known, in which case you could demand more. A good DP could make $1200-1500 a day on a music video shoot. Gaffer and Key Grip around $400-500 a day.
