Music Video

Hey, I'm looking to make a music video, are there any tips you might have? Thing to keep in mind before hand? and maybe tips for syncing the video and music together?

Thanks

i actually just finished the basic plan for my first music video. For syncing, i think that playing the song during the shooting would be great and then in post you match up the audio pretty well. there is probably a very professional and perfect way to do this, but i find it to be pretty productive. also, just watch music videos, lots of them. i am trying to emulate a rap music video (kind of in a mocking way) so i just watched like 20 rap music videos. it gives you ideas for shots and there is a good jump off point to get innovative, then you can just add in some cool shots and things you want to work on.
that at least is my plan, hope it helps

For syncing, I concure, just record sound on camera so you have reference audio. Even if u used timecode and all that crap, lip sync by the artist might still be off, so you're still gonna be slipping the video clip back and forth a little bit to make it a believable looking performance.
Focus on the image quality more than anything else and get lots of different focal lenghts to cut back and forth from. Edit depends on the style of music of course, but if it's the artist's single it's probably high energy so lots of focal lenghts helps cutting fast without feeling too disjointed (unless that's what u want).
And as with any first time experience, relax, try to sleep (I never can, my mind usually wont shut off the night before the first shoot on a project) and have fun!

Good Luck

i agree with cola on different focal lengths. for every setup you do, get at least a medium and a close up. it looks weird if you cut from a medium shot to another medium shot for instance, even if they are different setups.

and... for the most part, keep the camera moving even if only slightly. an ultra slow dolly move looks 100 times better than a lock off shot in a music video.

The last music video I was on had a clever method for "slating." In Final Cut they exported the songs timeline with timecode on it, then put that video on an iPod. For each sync shot they slated with the video iPod. They cued up the portion of the song for the shot, held it in front of camera, and then let it play. It was a pretty cool set up.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a video shoot for Jazz? More than likely I will be capturing audio during the shoot. Since Jazz is not played note for note how do I achieve cutaways from another take? Is my only option to have several cameras? As it stands now I will have 3 cameras. One will be static and two will be manned on tripods or Jibs. I had planned for glide-cam shots but I can't get close without stepping into the shot for the other cameras. Has anyone ever tried to use cuttaways that might not match note for note as they would during a pre-recrded playback?

Thanks for your time.

you can make it work. music vid cuts are so quick you can almost put any clip in any spot in the song and with a little tweaking forward or backwards it will fit. doesn't work so well for vocals but instruments should be ok.

then just get a lot of shots where you can't see exactly what they are playing. lots of b-roll.

or you could tell the guys to try and play it like they recorded it since it's a video....
