So I was asked by one of my friends to do a music video for her. She's almost signed to a record deal in LA with some producers and they want a music video that looks very professional...soooo she comes to me asking to do a video, and since I'm a good friend, I said yes. They said they would pay me..and they wont take no for an answer....what should I charge??

This is her myspace...they want a video for the first song. Dream About You.
What you guys think of the song?

I have to finish major shooting before I leave for 5 weeks working on a feature. It's gonna be crazy. I'll post some pics when we start production.

I just listened to the song and it's pretty good. I think she really has some potential and you can cleary tell she can sing.

Without knowing what type of script treatment you have for the video it would be hard to give a price but if possible you should start at 1500-2000 and go up from there

Well..we'll be discussing ideas tomorrow of what to have in the video.

So far at this point theres no concept.

Whats your time worth? I just charge by the day. if you are good you can get paid for your scout days too.

If you are starting out $550/ 10 hrs is a good rate. and it only goes up from there.

Nice sales pitch.

hahahaha

Well before she used to bug me about a video..then just stopped randomly..then she says she has a mastered version of the song and doesnt mention a video

from what i've seen on tv, you need to include lots of women dancing around in bikinis and throwing cash around. make sure the main character drives an escalde with outrageously large rims on it. if you can get shots of the bikini-clad women washing the escalde, even better. remember, the key here is to have as little plot as possible and focus on the dancers and how much money you have.

Shooting starts Monday morning...waking up and going to the beach to shoot the video at 7 am...FUN!!!

Any equipment suggestions that I should bring? So far its the camera, tripod, old laptop to transfer P2 footage. What else? Does anyone know of a speaker or some sound system thats small yet portable that can be used to play the music in the background so she can sing to it?

whats the budget? the director get about 10% of the budget on big music videos. some directors get more. up to 30%.

The Music vide ois a big deal, its their calling card. make it your fulltime job for the 3 weeks of pre/post and shooting days. Bill accordingly. if their budget is 500$ thats bad. if their budget is 10,000$ thats better. but a good music video on HD ( forget film) can cost 30,000$ with wardrobe, makeup, sets being built, carpenters, grips gaffers camera rental ETC.

Yeah but...Timur at this moment in time..shes not signed at a record deal yet, so her rents are paying me. And I dont have access to all that equipment...I'm only 17. haha

Probably the only budget is me being paid..thats about it. I talked to her rents, they said they'd pay me $500 in cash for one day of shooting, lunch and transportation included. Her mom is her manager right now. They think that if this video goes well, she'll get signed and she'll get a pro manager.
Good thing is, we're making a joint copyright to the video. They can't distribute or show it or anything like that publicly unless I agree with it too...atleast I get hold on to something.

Anyone know how to write a contract/deal? or know where I can get a basic one and just change up some of the wording and names?

hmmm.... ok, in that case, use your brain and remeber there are NO rules. Anyhtign is art, and use that to your advantage. Create imagery.

Here's some pics from the shoot that went wrong...

The P2 card was acting up...cloudy weather...gaahh!!!

in cloudy weather, over expose a bit then bring it down in post. also push the chroma level up a bit, and keep the master ped up higher than normal. this will give you more room to play with in post.

I did overexpose it actually a bit..even though it looked awful in the VF..it came out pretty good on the TV when played back with it color corrected.

I wish it was sunny with like puffy clouds and blue skies...would have looked soooo much better..

I'll post some camera shots tomorrow when I finish dueling it out with the people at Panasonic in Secaucus tomorrow afternoon about the P2 card.
