The video was shot on a Sony FX1 and edited sing FCP. When I convert it to MPEG-2 or encode it with DVD studio pro, the picture quality is bad and there are artifacts. I tried to burn encode it using HD then burn it but the DVD player cannot play it?

If something was shot on HD, how do you put it on a normal DVD and get it to play on a normal TV without loosing any quality.

well, you can't....

the best you can do (short of HD-DVD and Blu-ray authoring) is to compress the video using Compressor (2-pass, ac3 audio, with a fairly high video bitrate). The compression control of DVDSP isn't very good. Using Compressor will allow you to take care of the artifacting that you are finding.

After completing your HDV project create a new SD sequence and nest the HDV project in it to scale the HDV to SD. Then render an uncompressed SD file.

Use that file to encode your SD MPEG.

This workflow yields much better quality.
