Music video shoot

Hey Guys,
I was recently approached by a band, whose music I'm not too stoked about, to shoot a music video for them. What do you guys usually do when these situations come up? Just charge them a little bit more? Usually if I like the band I will be okay with not charging very much... but this isn't the case here.

Just wondering how other approach these situations.

Thanks for any feedback

Through the roof. Lol. Do you like the people in the band? You could refer them to someone else or just charge a fair price and cowboy up. You still have a job most people would kill for so what if you don't like the music. Be professional and do the job. You think the janitor likes cleaning the bathrooms?

That's true. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it :)

I'm not even sure the band is willing to pay very much money so we will see. I havent met them yet since another band referred me but I'm sure they are great people.

Obviously the pay isn't going to pay your rent. I don't know about you but if I don't like the song I wouldn't even consider filming. However, if they're willing to pay you what's fair then possibly. I just can't get motivated to poor music. I'm in a stage of building my reel so I'd love to create a nice piece.

Why should it matter whether you like the song or not?

If you want work and you want to add to your portfolio then do it.
It's gigs like this that I love so much because it gives me a chance to learn how to be creative on the fly and establish a good rep within the music community.

And let's face it, it's just more experience working behind the camera...that's worth it alone.

I can honestly say I would not have worked half the jobs I have if I didn't like a song, or person, or script.
...but it's work and I love to shoot.

Abu, I'm totally with you and that is sort of how I feel. I'm not really feeling the music and it isnt motivating me but I can also see what Vince is saying and if I do get payed then that can go towards paying my 7D off. :)

Unless there is something philosophical going on, if cinematography is your 'profession' or 'wanabe' profession, then I'd suggest learning to work with a variety of material, even if deep down 'you don't particularlly care for it'.

If you have moral objections, like the lyrics are extoling the virtues of drugs, sex, rock-n-roll, and you object that... of course pass...

But if it is more on the order of aethetics... getting in the habit of cherry picking projects, will probably not lead to career success...

I agree that bad music isn't very motivating ... and if that's the case - ie...if it's not a matter of you not liking the style of music, but not wanting to put your name on something that's absolute junk musically, then that's a different story.
I would go and meet them and see what the guys are like. Maybe they already have something in mind for the vid and half the work is done for you.
You never know till you get there, and you'll never get there without trying.
...and if they're paying decently, throw it all on gear and keep moving forward.....this is how I got my 7D and accesorizzles :cheesy:

So when you have a website for your work, under services is it going to read..

Events
Weddings
Commercials
Music Videos (BUT ONLY IF I LIKE THE SONG!!)

You are a filmmaker. You have clients. Your job is to serve the clients needs(which will include their interest) WITH YOUR SKILL.

I agree, I don't like shooting things that don't interest me. But I do it because I enjoy shooting and using my skill. The more I get to push REC, the more I learn. Practice(projects) make you a better filmmaker.

Wish you luck.
