Music Video Planning

Those of you that have produce Music Videos from start to finish, about how long is the total process in terms of planning, shooting and then post? Days, weeks, Months?

Next week I have to meet with the artist to discuss ideas and concepts. From there my writer will form a treatment. We will then go over the treatment with the artist and make changes as needed. Once all is in agreement, I will put together a shoot schedule and, plan a pre production meeting, do the shoot, go to post and deliver the end product.

What is the normal timeframe for something like this? O yea I would need to scout locations to shoot too!!!

Is a month about enough time to get all the above items done? Do I need to get the treatment copyrighted once completed or just copyright the finished product? I guess it would nt hurt to copyright the script too. I know that usually takes up to 6 months to get the form back though.

I find everyones expectations are different. The total time is really budget orientated. Big budget, big locations, big crew, big planning = longer time. Tiny budget - one week at most.

Seriously though its all communicative. So client wants xx type of location, then get on it. Make sure you keep him / them etc posted on progress. Something they want specifically by request could in fact not be available for two months because of y. If a client is told one month and you finish in 45 days - sorry bub youre late and no gold star for you. If a clients is told 60 days for the whole process and you finish in 45 - GOLD star!

Every job, every client is different.
