Music Video Effect: How do you do this technique?..

Just wondering because it seems simple enough yet the way I keep trying it isn't working soooooo..

this is basically it..
http://www.mtv.com/videos/usher/476362/hey-daddy-daddys-home.jhtml

the video is ushers "daddy's home" and the effect is a couple places: the beginning shot is a montage of photo's but the way they flash is somewhat 'organic' to me then just placing pictures/frames at certain parts in a timeline. so I would like to know if there's a way to alter the keyframes (maybe in the graph editor) to give it a more organic move. and then the standard one is at 42 seconds where it flashes.
Its basically when , lets say a snare rolls, and then the main footage seems to flash over top of another piece (or maybe just something like a white solid in after effects) and the footage flashes like 10 or so times following a snare roll. Is there a way to automate this with keyframes (expression maybe) because when I try the way I thought would work, by manually slicing frames and placing in what I thought to be a good position, it just didn't look right ?? any help would be appreciated.

Honestly, they look like straight cuts (i.e. no effects applied) to me. If that's the case, it's all about the timing (length and placement) of the blips... I mean clips. :)

IDK if there's an effect that can do that, but if you lay one vid track over another, and cut out parts of the top track according to the beat (talking about cutting out frames here), it should create a similar "flashy" effect when played back in real time.

IMHO, this would be just as easy to re-create in an NLE, unless, of course, this is an AE plug-in/effect.

I agree that there doesn’t seem to be anything more complicated going on than just straight cuts.

The reason why the first effect (the rapid flash-frame montage) may seem ‘organic’ in contrast to your own efforts so far is probably down to each successive frame being complimentary -- in terms of both composition and colour -- to the one that preceded it. There may also be a narrative logic to the sequence that the viewer only picks up subliminally.

The second effect can easily be achieved without any tedious slicing/dicing by applying the ‘Strobe Light’ effect on the upper layer, changing the ‘Strobe’ setting to ‘Makes Layer Transparent’, then tweaking the ‘Duration’ and ‘Period’ settings to taste. (If you know the exact tempo of the music -- in terms of beats per minute -- you should be able to calculate it precisely, although it’s probably not really necessary.)

really appreciate that strobe effect technique.. that's what I was lacking for the somewhat 'flashing' while cutting effect!!

BTW do you think the 1st montage cuts were cut by a certain amount of frames? ie: 1,2, frames cut, 1,2 frames cut etc.. how many frames do you think they kept and cut OR do you think it was more just one frame, cut, one frame cut, etc..

as for the straight cut's idea, I really didn't think it was anything other than that (cuts versus an actual plugin. I was looking for more of a technique than an effect plugin) but I really zoomed in , got exactly on beat ( like i would think it needed to be) and it just didn't seem like it rode the clips the same way I see in music videos (mostly hip hop) . Just thought there was maybe something subtle I wasnt doing or what not.. BUT thanks!! I'll try again..
