MUSIC VIDEO EDITORS: Whats your Workflow??

edit: I had this in the premiere section but wasnt getting many responses so I am trying to see if any editors are in here for more.

I am an aspiring music video director and have taken my time to do some studying but I am getting a little confused about the workflow.

what do you guys do? ie: Do you cut everything in premiere (evidently this is a question for premiere users not fcp)and then export it into after effects for color correcting and additional effects? How do you save out to go back into after effects? <--the reason I ask that is because when I save an after effects file to "save as" a premiere file it loses some effects. Do I need to precompose it to save effects to be able to be read by premiere?

Do you add transitions in premiere when you cut? because once again, if I add a transition in premiere it doesnt show up in after effects. OR do you just do transitions at the end when you bring it back into after effects?

Just basically, what is your workflow!! lol

I'm really just trying to pick the brain of some established video editors to see if I can find a good workflow and understand how its being done. By the way, I'm on CS4, PC, quad core.

Thanks!!

It really depends on the particular project. Some music videos don't require ANY time in After Effects.

The obvious answer is: Do your major cuts in a NLE like Premiere, and do your heavy effects work in After Effects. What you do first depends on your project. Outline it, storyboard it, and have a plan ready for when it comes time to shoot and edit. The harmonious marriage of the two are what make for successful film projects.

Think about everything, or at least as much as possible, before you set up a single c-stand.

Otherwise, to each their own. I'm sure some users here have age-old techniques they carry with them from client to client. I say KEEP CHANGING! Don't become the wedding videographer of music videographers. ;)

haha, nice.

I always had problems to complete a project, always thinking something could still be improved here and there, so I ended up jumping back and forth from NLE to AE and the other way around, just to lose the way (and lots of time).

Now I try to define what I want before I start and how I get there best. I often completely rule off the editing process before I do any CC, fades or effects in AE, just to force myself to make clear decisions.

Anyway, you'll have to see what workflow is the best for you - everything Kyle said pretty much hits the nail on the head.

I know im late on this but the way I do it is like you said cut it up in premiere then add in transitions color correction and grading titling and effects in after effects, then if i have to put it back in premiere for any reason I export out an avi of the video and put it back in premiere however now adays I just put the ae project file in adobe media encoder and put out my final formats.
