Music Video Cinematography #9 The Fray - "Never Say Never"

Okay, I know someone is thinking "Why is he blowing his wad at us with these 'Music Video' critics?". And my answer to you is.... "because I will be working on a real video and I won't be able to do it for days." That's why I'm doing it now

Anyways, the third video of today and the second Fray song is actually the music video version of the "Russian Ark". And it's not because of the one long steady shot,...... it's because they're both poetic. And I know some of your will argue with me on that point. And if you do its because you failed to realize that this video involved the shot shooting normal fps, and then speed up and slow down, speed up, slow down, up, down...... Do you you know how hard that "sh**" is to do?!?!?!?! And to add the perfectly timed explosions, the hard rain coming down, the detail on the houses, the dog being shot out of a canon, and the white nerdy guy running in a funny, It's like Michael Bay, the Russian Ark and the Onion head all wrapped into one burrito!! Anyways, this video is really solid with great lighting, great shot compositions, and great overall set design........Not only that,.......... but the girl at the end also kind of looks the same onion headed version of the singer.

Here's the video....

I like the video but didn't actually see any speed ramps. (Which aren't that difficult, btw).

Agreed. I didn't see any speed ramps either, just looks like they overcranked it along with the music being played at a faster rate and synced together in post when slowed down to 24fps.

That, and it's definitely not one continuous take, there's plenty of spots for them to splice multiple takes together.

as said above, there were several cuts in this video and they were actually a little obvious. Smoke doesn't cut together that well, "single shot" videos should hide their cuts in foreground objects passing by the camera, it can be much more invisible. The single shot video (and feature film) has been pulled off way better (I might just be cranky cause the song is just so damn emo).
Did anyone else feel the slow motion singing gave a silly look to the singer? Maybe it was his performance, but something seemed off keeping the constant slow motion...
... thinking about videos I like with slowmotioned synced singing, I think the singer in those don't move their head. In this video, he kept on moving his head, which amplified the slow motion effect. I think the performer should let the slow motion work on their surroundings, whilst minimizing the effect on themselves.

The speed ramp is definitely there, just look at the slow motion shots and you'll never see the singers lips because they couldn't sync the sound with the high speed of the camera
