Music Video Audio Synch Problems, 24p Normal

Hello,

Im editing a music video which someone shot in 24p Normal with a DVX100b. I have captured the material to FCP 4.5 at the normal NTSC settings and placed it on a 29.97 time line. I then brought in the 3 minute CD track bumped up to 48k and also placed it on the time line. I synched up the beggining of the song and as it plays it slowly gets out of synch. By the time it gets to the end its about 1-2 seconds off! Ive searched around and it seems Im doing things right or am I not?

Thanks for the help!

have you tried leaving the audio at 44.1? doesn't make much sense but it has worked for me in the past.

does it really matter though? your surely not going to have a single cut for the entire thing right? and if you are, then here's a solution. figure out how many frames off it is at the end. then divide that number of frames up evenly through the song and just insert some extra duplicate frames to fix it. just try not to dupe the frames that are already duped by the 24p pulldown process. if you do it right, you'll never see the difference. i had to do this on a live thing once and nobody noticed.

Hey cheezweezl!

Thanks for the reply. I have tried leaving the audio at 44.1 and the same thing happens. And you are right Im going to use lots of fast cuts. I have already started doing that actually. I just what to know whats happening cuz that sort of thing is going to drive me insane! hahaha!

Can you post maybe a slimmed down export of it here so that we can see it? ...Sometimes, you have to sync the audio manually, which can be a pain, but eventually pays off.

Also, what Cheezweezl said was correct. You couldn't have done all of your editing in-camera, right? If you did, just cut where the camera cuts and your audio should sync up, theoretically. Also, your film might not exactly match where and when the song changes.

it's a weird problem and it has happened to me off and on with no consistancy. maybe the cd player or whatever you used to sync the band to played back at a slightly different speed or something... now if the audio and video from the tape were out of sync with each other then that would be a different problem, but since you are importing your audio from a cd and trying to sync to footage that was recorded in real time, you just have to chalk it up to the unknown and don't let it drive you nuts.....

"maybe the cd player or whatever you used to sync the band to played back at a slightly different speed or something..."

Interesting cheezweezl, I wondered about that and in fact the audio from the tape, which was palyed back on a boombox i suppose, is in synch with the video perfectly. Now, when I compare that audio to the CD track I import they are off synch to eachother... Sounds like it shouldnt be that way but it seems that the CD player they used played back at a faster rate... very strange. But thanks for your help, I wont let it bother me anymore...haha

Thanks! Thats a good idea! Your using the same format for both instances... Ill let the director know...
