Music Use Question

Can anyone chime in on the rules/laws about using music online. I'm guessing that if you are making money off of something then you obviously need to pay for the music rights - I am familiar with Broadcast rules - but not so much with internet. If its for a non-profit website or posted on YouTube what are the general rules? Thoughts? Experiences?

Regardless of where you play music you don't own, you need licenses, for profit or non-profit. They're pretty damn close to even passing laws that would require terrestrial radio stations to get licenses and pay royalty fees. Internet rules follow Broadcast rules for the most part. Get in contact with BMI, ASCAP, SESAC, and SoudExchange.

YouTube will send you an e-mail if they discover copyrighted music in your video. In many cases, you will be allowed to keep the video posted, but your page is subject to them posting advertising on it.

bottom line, you always need permission of some sort, and many venues make you prove it.
