Music Scoring - Sony Cinescore

Okay, here's my beef with Cinescore. I just bought it. They say (even on the box it reads this, ) PROFESSIONAL SOUNDTRACK CREATION "perfect for movies, slideshows, commercials and radio productions."

However once you open the box and begin reading the manual you find out that you will have to purchase a license if you are using their music on anything other than for home video use. How "professional" is that?? Internet, TV & DVD sales...you need a license. Then they send you to Thompson's website, talking about mp3 rights & licensing.

So basically Sony, you are LYING !!! ???? Has anyone else checked into the licensing of this product and it's music tracks usage?

I don't have a copy of the Cinescore EULA, but my guess is you might have misinterpereted the Mp3 patent licenses with the actual content licenses.

I *THINK* that the tracks Cinescore produces are royalty free, however the file formats they are created in are in patented formats (such as Mp3) that require a patent license to use for commercial purposes.

Keep in mind that if you produce DVDs for commercial purposes, you must pay MPEG-LA patent license fees for each disc you sell. So this is nothing new.

Assuming Sony's EULA does state that the music itself is royalty-free, you could simply distribute your work in unencumbered formats such as Ogg Theora (video) with Ogg Vorbis for the audio track.
