music samples 4 sec?

can anyone refresh me w/ how many seconds we can record of copyrighted w/o a suit... i think its 4 seconds (remember 'puff daddy- every breath u take?) sting didn't like it, but it was legit....thanks//// pardo de kaedara'e...

from my copyright law understanding any recognizable sample is copyrighted.

It basically says that any use (even 1 note) is against the law. All depends on what song and how you use it. Dangerous ground.

I believe Puff got permission and I definitely remember seeing Sting perform the song with Puffy on the Grammys. Looked like Sting was happy ($$$). Remember when Vanilla Ice said he didn't sample Queen/David Bowie's "Under Pressure" ? Maybe that's why he's in the "Where are they now?" file. You don't steal from the big boys and get away with it.
