Music rights

I'm from Montreal, Canada and I'm planning to start shooting my next TV series on extreme sports. I want to add some music to it and I was wondering how can I do this without having problems with copyrights and everything .... I have bough all the songs I want to use on iTunes but I guess this is not enough right?

Your lucky you're in montreal cause you've got a wicked music scene at your feet. Consider local bands that wont have too many lawyers in your way, plus they might toss you some $$$ for publicity.

You are right that buying the songs on iTunes does not give you the right to use them in your video. You would need to acquire additional rights to do that if the material is copyrighted.

I would like to use a few song of the band from Europe named The Sounds. Who should I contact to use their songs?

Well i'm guessing since they're on itunes then they're big....well big enough to charge you a heck of a lot of money for a song. If you've got the budget, go for it. You'd probably have to contact the record label or something. Based on what i found on their site going to their manager is the best bet, as apposed to going straight to the band.

Remember that when you get music rights you have to license both the written music and the recorded performance. Usually these are held by the same person or company, but not always.
