Hey guys,

Im going to start production on these short religious interpretations pretty soon... and I would like to use some music for them. Yet, they are going to be sold and I need to know what the deal is with copyrights.

Would I need to contact every artist I want to use seperately or is there some sort of 'domestic use license' I can purchase? I live in the US btw.

Thanks-

T

You'll need to contact the record label to obtain the synch rights. Then you'll have to contact the publishing company, try BMG or ASCAP, to obtain the mechanical rights. Be ready to hear some ridiculous price quotes. If the artists are on major labels, it may not be worth your time. Independent record companies and artists are much easier, and cheaper, to deal with. If you are producing religious oriented materail, a spiritual artist may be willing to work with you on price. Hope this helps.

Or, you could buy some royalty-free music. After all, it doesn't sound like you're wanting the rights to "Sexy Back". :)

Even some major labels are willing to be helpful. This is from Universal's website:

PSAs, Gratis & Charity Requests

Contrary to the policies of many large music companies, Universal will consider gratis or reduced-fee requests from students, low-budget filmmakers, reputable charities and producers of Public Service Announcements. If for some reason your request is denied, we will not be able to provide a detailed explanation as to why. If we need additional information from you in order to process your request, we will get in touch with you.
