Music Licensing

I have been contacting various artists for music in my next video. I have mostly been communicating via email to the bands. Is it ok to have a copy of an email from the band directly stating that I may use their music as my official "permission slip". This is my first attempt at music rights, so I am really new to it all. What do most bands usually want to know about the project before they give you permission?

Just a guess but I'd say NO.... an email will not cut it. They could come back and say they never wrote that email, someone else in my office did it and I had no clue.. Besides, if it's a major label artist they probably can't give you permission. It would probably need to come from the label in writing.

Usually it's better to get something with a signature, whether it's original or by fax. I've done it with email before, but I know it can come to bite me one day.

Most musicians want to know what kind of video/show you have, where and when it will air or sell, how many people will see it, and if you're making money from it. If they're up and comers, they usually want more publicity, but they also don't want their music to appear in undesirable places.
