Multiple panes sliding wipe effect

Those are just split screens. That's not hard to do, but you have to use additional layers for each picture. You might want to take a look at the Digital Box plugin from Digital Heaven if you're not familiar with creating split screens.

I know how to do split screens but how do you move them like that? is it through keyframing?

Fairly easy key framing in motion tab. I've done this for several projects recently. Just make sure to plan out what you want to do, because making changes involves multiple frames at once. You can always replace a frame with another clip and copy the attributes if needed.

Essentially as one frame is moving, another frame needs to move at the same rate with same start and stops to maintain the gap. It seemed daunting the first time I tried but got much easier as time went on. The most I've done is four moving frames at once. It's very slow work, but rewarding if it fits the piece well.

Just take advantage of all the frame sides in the crop part of motion tab as needed and you can move in a frame and out without ever changing it's center point. No right or wrong. I've found many methods to achieve similar looks.
