Multiple Monitors ?

I have a Mac Pro 2,1 still running FCP7, but recently purchased the ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card to upgrade from the XT1900. Have 16 GB RAM, latest Snow Leopard OS.

The ATI 5770 allows for up to three monitors to be connected. Is there anyone using 3 monitors for video or photo editing? I currently use two, one main and the other a Sony HD monitor connected via a BM Intensity Pro card. Other than flexibility, is there a reason to have/use all 3 ports? Does having the 5770, and for example, a mini-displayport to HDMI adapter cable, eliminate the need for the Intensity Pro to connect to the HDMI monitor?

I will be transitioning to FCP X; I plan to install it on a separate start up hard drive from FCP 7.

thanks for any feedback.

I would get the Intensity Pro no matter what. If you hook up to a monitor through the graphics card, you have computer OS gamma and color profiles getting in the way. It's better for quality and color accuracy sake to let a proper output card handle things.

Three monitors will degrade the card's performance. Each of the three monitors (and who the heck needs three anyway?) will cause the card to allocate a segment of it's VRAM and GPU resources to each monitor, leaving less for applications to access.

You can install FCP X on your FCP 7 boot drive. Lots of us have done it and have no issues. Depends on what you're workflow is.
