I, for one, wanted to find out who they got the idea from, and found this:

I wouldn't exactly say FCP stole the idea of multicam- it's been on the request list since version 1.0 mostly from ex-Avid editors. More like got a healthy kick in the right direction. And the implementation in 5.0 is far more useful and robust than Livecut. Though if you're stuck in below 5.0 this is the best option.
