Multicam Data Rates

Are my calculations correct? Do you only need a little over 3MB/s per standard def DV stream for multicam and around 10MB/s for cineform? Obviously besides disk speed Processor and Memory specs play a big part in how many simultaneous streams one can edit, but I'm looking at new hard drive options for my laptop.

This may help you, or not :)
This is my real world multi cam experience.
i7 920 oc to 3.5GHz. 64 bit Vegas
6 tracks of 1080i/p. Live band editing, so sometimes up to 6 cuts in a sec.
I used to proxy it all to 640x360p mpeg2, plays like a dream, looks like poo, then replace files ( original AVC, MXF and HDV ) and render in 3-4min increments.
All is good this way with few crashes.
I tried editing native, but would rarely get more than 3mins without a crash/lock up, especially if doing fast cutting.
I tried capturing it all to Sony 50mbps MXF, plays ok, but you need massive drive space, and the AVCHD does take a small quality hit.
Then, I bit the bullet and got Cineform, Last project I did, I edited for the first time 6 x 1080p multicam..... I cant go back.
Im getting a new lappy too, for holidays and such, my plan is.....
i7 (must have)
SSD system drive
Esata out to an external enclosure with at least a 7200rpm TB for converted CF files.
and that should give me a similar experience to my Desktop......

What kind of luck did you end up having with this?

Sorry bout late reply Charto, only just found it.
Havent got mine going yet, but,
had a look the other day at a friends system of the same spec and it looks like the theory is right anyway, it flies.
Im still looking for a lappy with 1x SSd and another 500gb hard drive on board, had no luck so far, if I cant find one ill go with the original plan.

I agree about transcoding taking a quality hit but my experience so far w/ Cineform Neoscene is that it's worth it if you make adjustments for the increased disk space requirements.

Check out the HP ENVY 17, they have the ssd/500gb option you're looking for (as well as Quad-Core i7).
