Mulling around a purchase . . .

. . . a JVC HR-30000U D-VHS VCR for $200.

I need a new VCR anyway . . .

But the $200 doesn't include component cables, D-VHS cassettes, another optical cable for the sound . . .

And the digital cable box's HD outputs are component only; the HD input on the VCR is FireWire only.

However, the TV does have an integrated tuner and I should be able to run a FireWire cable between the two and record HDTV signal from the air.

But then that's only broadcast networks.  Can't record off cable (sound, maybe, but what good does that do?).

But I suspect later versions of HD boxes will have FireWire outputs, so it's future-looking, at least.

D-Theater movies aren't available for rent locally (that I've found), nor are they worth the price of purchase (typically $35 vs. $15-20 for DVD).

It can, of course, record/play back  standard VHS and S-VHS, and also accept DV signal from the camera (I'm pretty sure).

And it's kinda cool-looking.

Sigh . . . if only there were HDD recorders which will record HDTV.
