MuchMusic's video delivery specifications!

Hey, I know my client wants to send their music video to muchmusic so i took a look at the technical specs required by them...

http://www.muchmusic.com/aboutus/musicvideosubmissions/form/MuchMusic_VideoDeliverySpecs.pdf

for one thing, its required to be delivered on digital betacam or betasp. I'm assuming my client is going to have to take the .mov file i create for them to somwhere else to have this converted... will this place also add the other requirements? such as:

'SMPTE standard LTC longitudinal Drop-Frame timecode shall be recorded continuously from the beginning of the reel to the end and not pass through zero at any point'

or

'Video Set Up (Black Level) shall be at 7.5 IRE units

there's a lot more things required and I'm just wondering if I need to bother learning how to do all this stuff or it will get done by a production house that does the initial transfer to Betacam or betacamsp....

anyone experienced with sending videos to MuchMusic?

I'd deliver a QuickTime and have a post-production house derive the tape and generate the timecode- it's pretty standard stuff. Just be sure to coordinate with the house to make sure you're sending a file they can use.

phew! now i just have to find out how much they cost.. not that I'll be paying it, but I dont think the client had any idea this would be extra..... cuz neither did I..... oops!

Well surely they know you don't have a digibeta deck laying around- the other stuff is typically included by the post house. I'd expect to pay maybe $100-200 plus tape stock.

oh that doesnt sound too bad, especially if they include closed captioning.

man, you have REALLY eased my mind Noah, thank you! i thought i was gonna have to figure out how to do all these things myself and possibly mess things up! despite being low budget, this video turned out really, really well and i think we might have a chance of them playing it on muchmusic.. so i just wanna do things right..

thanks again!

Is it really necessary to send in all that stuff just to pitch to Muchmusic though? I'd think a VHS or DVD screener would do the trick, then you'd follow the guidelines *if* they accepted it? It's a bit of $ to do if it's not a sure thing yet, I think.

hmm good question indeed... i THINK i read that they won't even screen videos that don't meet all requirments. what i showed here was just the technical.. there is also release forms, pictures, lyrics, artist bio, etc... but now you have me wondering so i will probably have to call someone there to clarify or dig through their website a bit more..

Yeah I would- I have not doubt you can't get a video actually played on Muchmusic without these specs. But it's probably not like the acquisitions guy is sitting there with a Digibeta deck on his deck. I'll guess it's a crappy DVD player.

I could help you with that.. I've been submitting videos to Much Music for nearly 10years. You really do need to keep within their specs.. They dont view videos on DVD or VHS. Also, there is certain paperwork that needs to be submitted along with it for it to be seen. email me thru my site below (trendsettermarketing.net) and I could help you out. I CC the video and make the beta SP for $200.00. If you have any questions, feel free to call me as well.. my info is on the site..

for a quick reference, you could check out the We the Kings video I just did and got up on myspace as a featured video.

oh so MuchMusic won't even screen your video unless you've got it on beta sp, close captioned , and all that??

I actually already was lookin into you guys for closed captioning, but was unaware you could help with all the other stuff too. if you can do EVERYTHING like laying the timecode track, the slate, the bars and tone, putting on beta sp, ETC (there's a lot of etc in that link i posted in the first message of this thread) then i'm SURE my client will go with you.

I just got a quote back from a local production house in vancouver here for almost $800!!!!!
