Mtv show "Cribs"

Has anybody watched that show Cribs on MTV? I am just wondering what are some the effects of editing they use on that show and how I can achieve a similiar look with FCP. I can't really describe what I see but I can tell they keyframe a lot of shots using speed ramps to get that sped up effect. I notice dissolves into dissolves of the same shot. I have also noticed they will take a clip like a pan shot of someone walking but wont actually let the pan of the camera play out...looks like they cut the clip in several places maybe adding a strobe effect which makes it look like a flashier pan.

I have been experimenting with some things like keyframes and all but I haven't been able to nail down how to get it to look like they do.

Re: Mtv show "Cribs"

It's a combination of different "abstract" edit techniques... If you get a chance, record footage from it and dump it into your NLE... then study it frame by frame.. you'll be surprised how incredibly simple many of the edits/shots are... Just be careful with timing and tempo... one cool effect that lasts just a bit too long blows the effect. Many editors not familiar with the design style of these urban edit techniques tend to be a little "slow" in the edit... (things last too long). Remember it's the MTV generation, and the edits are quick, quick, quick.

Re: Mtv show "Cribs"

Well I have been editing tape to tape News and Entertainment stuff for about 10 years now but editing with a NLE is somewhat a new experience. Thats a good idea about recording the show and studying it in my NLE. I used to do that at work, I would record a music video to Beta off the satellite feed then watch it frame by frame for certain effects and editing techniques that they used.

Re: Mtv show "Cribs"

If you go up to the Screen Grabs/Clips of DVX footage here on this site. There is a Music Video submitted by Carrington Benz called Dirty Raver. This has some of the editing techniques that I was referring to in my post. He did state that he used after effects for some of it. I was wondering what he did to speed the clips up in the way he did. The stutter shutter look was hot too where the guys are dancing. Looks like he used a Blink video filter. There was a shot where he took a freeze frame then was able to have it zoom in and out. I am guessing that Keyframes will allow that to happen.
