Hi gang,

I've been looking around for a new laptop for editing video and photos and I've bumped into some very interesting MSI models (12gb ram, 2 500gb sata hd at 7200, 1.5gb dedicated graphics card, hdmi,, full hd screen resolution) at some very competitive prices. The configuration and the price seem awesome and as a bonus most of them have a "special cooling" system that is supposed to be good (I've been having serious problems with my HP Pavillion in this field...it gets way too hot and it turns off by it self). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone out there has any experience with MSI laptops.

cheers

Oh man im all over this thread...lol. I have one for our field laptop. Just make sure you get the one with the graphics card tha enables MPE. It's awesome...we use it for on location media management, spot color grading, and editing. You can very much use a second monitor as mine has an hdmi out. Last time I edited a project in a hotel room, throwing the preview out to my room's flat screen. It has turbo-fan control that gets loud if you enable it but i think is necessary when operating in this way. You can also use a field monitor as a second monintor. The colored lights all over these msi laptops (they are built for gaming) are kind of embarrassing unless you turn them off, lol. I love this laptop, very very glad I got one. Can't beat the price.

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

I have an MSI GT660 that I bought second hand. Got it cheap because it would blue screen. It had a bad memory stick and the seller couldn't figure it out.The screen resolution isn't very high on this model, but for field work it's OK. I enabled the graphics card for MPE with the "hack". Swapped out the 6GB memory for 12GB. Added a second 7200RPM drive. Works very well for me and the final cost was way less than they were selling for on sale almost a year ago. And yes, turn off the funky LED's. The turbo fan function is loud, as RAC stated above.

MSI is the only laptop that is qualified as fast enough to run the BlackMagic Intensity by Black Magic - I guess that means something.
