mpeg4

Am hearing a lot about mpeg 4, expecially since introduced of Vegas 6.0d.
I do some video for websites and I have been using .wmv files.
Compared a .wmv file with the project rendered to mpeg4.
.wmv file was 2 MB smaller.
The quality seemed about the same.
Now, I am no techie, but could someone help me to understand the hoopla surrounding mpeg4.
For my purposes file size and quality are primary concerns.
Always a trade off.
End user doesn't want to wait for download and video should look and sound pretty good.
.wmv seems to achieve that for us.
Am I missing something.

The only time I use mpeg4 is when I do QuickTime. When I remember. ;) It's better (imo) than the regular QuickTime codec, but only the newer players will play it. (And by newer, I don't mean v7. v6 likes it too, as far as I know, so it's only the 17 folks who haven't updated in a loooong while who might have trouble.)

Is there a way I can produce an MPEG 4 in Premiere Pro 2.0? If not, how whould i go about converting it?
