MPEG4 Proxy: How great would this be after a firmware update...

The SPX800 has always had the option of using an optional encoder card to output MPEG4 proxy data into the MXF file (that's what the empty proxy folder on your P2 cards is designed to hold). As I understand it, to get the capability, a firmware upgrade to the SPX800 was required as well as installing the AJ-YAX800G encoder card in place of one of the P2 cards.

It makes me wonder, would this option be functional with the HVX?

Here's how Panasonic described what the YAX800G is capable of...

Proxy Data Recording*
Mount an AJ-YAX800G Proxy Encode Card, and the AJ-SPX800 records MPEG4 proxy (low-resolution) data — useful for news flash or other studio news system use — onto the card along with the full-resolution data. The three levels of proxy video are available: 1.5Mbps, 768kbps or 196kbps. Proxy data can also be recorded onto an SD Memory Card mounted in the slot provided, for easy viewing on a laptop PC. The encode card, available as an option, lets you upgrade as future image encode systems evolve.
*Proxy data is AV data with low-resolution MPEG4 video and audio containing time code, metadata, and other control information.
*Use of DCF Technologies under license from Multi-Format, Inc.

I for one would love to have this capability, even if it meant only having a single P2 card mounted at any given time. Letting a client walk away with the proxie files to log with would be terrific.

Has there been any further speculation on whether Panasonic will produce one of these for the HVX?

David, on a side note, I got a 720p projector ceiling mounted with a 130 16x9 diagonal screen in my living room now, with an HDMI HDTV connection. Plug any HD or HDV camera into it via compontent and the footage is amazing.

My house is a movie theater!

Filmstox:
i want something like that(YAX800G) for AVCHD + the included super low bit rate "proxy" files
like 20MBit HD
Same data rate as HDV except that its frame independent and 4:2:2
because its a super efficient codec the quality will stomp HDV
and maybe even an in camera down conversion from the DVCPROHD - to AVCHD card
that would make my day
