mpeg in fcp

Stupid question possibly but I am editing some random stuff together for my girlfriend and she has captured a load mpeg videos with her still camera. When I take these in to FCP I can't hear or edit the audio.

Anyone know how to separate the audio so I can edit it. She has done a surprisingly good job with the images but the sound is evil and needs a Soundtrack Pro exorcism to cast out the bad things.

I use a G5 Power Mac but have zero external equipment.
