MPEG Files have no audio in Vegas or WMP!

First, a little background:
I'm the official editior for my high school's "video club", and they are doing a short piece about a play the drama club is putting on. After shooting, they handed me the Sony HDD cam that they shot it on. Now, I've edited stuff from this cam before, but not with Vegas, and not on this computer. Therefore, when I went to edit this new footage, I found that it had no audio. I know that the clips do have audio because I checked on an older computer; however, neither Vegas nor WMP will play the clips with audio.

My question is this:
What's the best way to fix this problem? Is there any way to update my MPEG codec or do something so I don't have to convert all my files to AVI or extract the audio on another computer? I really don't want to have to spend most of my time converting these files when I could be editing.

Thanks in advance!

when you say no audio, you mean that you can't see any audio waveform in the vegas timeline?

what model of sony hdd cam was used?

And which version of Vegas is this? If this is the Movie Studio 9.0/a version, then there's a note about mpeg audio in the sony site, advising users to download an mpeg dll file to fix the problem.

By "no audio", I mean that Vegas shows no audio details in media properties, and when I drag any of the media onto the timeline, it only fills a video track, there is no audio track.
Also, the HDD cams we use are Sony DCR-SR42/82s.

I'm using Vegas Pro 8.0. Is the dll fix still applicable?
