MPEG audio

I have this issue where I used an mpeg audio file and it sounded weird on playback, and when rendered it was playing pretty fast with a really high pitch (rendered to .wmv). Also, I used an mpeg1 video last week, and it was all over the place with random artifacts, noise, looping where there was no looping. Weird stuff. But these files were fine on Microsoft Movie Maker, and rendered with no problem.

I use Vegas 5, anything I can do about these file types (mpeg1, no known problem with mpeg 2 as far as I've used them) so I don't run into these bugs? Any other file types I should be wary of also?

*weird choices for media, I know, but they are used b/c I have to, not b/c I want to.

MPEG audio recorded at what sample rate? Bit depth? Convert them first to a useful file format. Although Vegas *should* be able to resample them, I've come across a few weird files that don't work the way they should.
