MPEG-2 into FCP?

Hi all,
A friend of mine sent me a DVD of some footage he shot and wanted me to mess around with an edit and color correction. Problem is he compressed the footage into an MPEG-2 format and I can't import the footage into FCP. Does anyone know a way I can either import these files or how to convert them into something FCP will allow me to import? If so, what program can do this?

Thanks in advance-

Re: MPEG-2 into FCP?

Do you lose resolution by using handbrake? Then when you go back onto DVD does it get compressed again. I've used DVDxDV to move MPEG2 into FCP and can't tell? Any gurus have an answer? Grassy-ass.

Re: MPEG-2 into FCP?

When going from one codec or format to another you're likely to lose some resolution unless you're going up in quality (i.e. DV to Animation codec) Since MPEG-2 is different than MPEG-4 or DV you'll likely see some degrading.
Obviously the best thing is to get the orginal source if possible (such as captured/edited DV) but you should do a test since the loss may not be noticable for your project.

Thanks Scott...i'll dig up the originals and grind it out. Damn. It's better then a hot iron in the eye though.
