Mpeg 2 DVD not cutting it

Whenever i encode to Mpeg 2 using premier pro cs3, with the high quality 16x9 preset, my DVD's burned never come out as nice as a crappy program like nero, which encodes my regular AVI file.

Mpeg 2 always comes out very blocky and low rez looking. How can i achieve high quality DVD's??

Hey Papa

We had this problem a while back. Most notably our titles came out fuzzy and werent as crisp as they could be. After lots of experimenting this is our new workflow.

Make an AVI in premiere at full res (we're usually working in an HD timeline)
Take the AVI into TMPGEnc and convert to an mpeg2.
Take the mpeg2 into Encore and import as a timeline so Encore wont try and transcode it (it wants to transcode if you import as an asset for some reason)

The difference is night and day. TMPG is less than $100 and has paid for itself many times over for us. It makes beautiful wmv's as well and has some nice features for batch converting and what not. It does alot of other codecs too, but those are the only two I use regularly.

I do similar, however instead of rendering out an AVI, I export using the free Debugmode Frameserver - this app essentially exports the project footage frames as your encoder needs them (eg: TMPGENC "sees" a pre-rendered .avi file and converts it frame by frame - all this is done without you needing to do a pre-render. It "renders" as it goes)

It's a handy tool :)

yah i'm going through this right now dvx 24p footage 4:3 going to dvd.. exporting from pro cs2 as mpg2 and it looks choppy and blocky.
I did not touch the bitrate...whats the most common bitrate for this stuff
