mp4 renders - 4 frames out of sync!

In Vegas 7, when I render to mp4, the video is consistently late by 4 frames.

My project settings match my media, which match the render output. SD, DV Widescreen, 24f, 2:3 pulldown.

I rendered to mp4, 23.976, 1 PAR, VBR 8 million / 5 million.

I fixed the problem by moving the entire video track 4 frames earlier in the timeline, but it's really a lame solution to have to take everything out of sync like that.

Any suggestions?

Some interesting/disturbing findings:

The 4 frame sync problem only occurs when I play the mp4 file with the Quicktime player (version 7.5.5). But when I play the same exact file back using VLC player, everything is perfectly in sync.

What is the deal?!?

Is there something I don't know about Quicktime? (I'm on a PC, btw.)

I've updated to the latest QT, 7.6.6. Problem is still here.

I set the QT Sample Rate to 48 khz, matching the original media, Vegas project, and the rendered mp4 samplerates. Problem is still here.

So which mp4 file is actually in sync???

1. Original file. QT plays this one 4 frames out of sync, but VLC plays it perfectly in sync.
2. The offset file (wherein I slipped the video track 4 frames early). QT plays this one perfectly, but it's out of sync in VLC.

Can someone please help? I have to deliver this to a client, and um, need to send them a synced mp4. It shouldn't be this hard.

Hm. Some of those posts go back to 2003.

So is it possible that Quicktime is really this big a steaming pile? Granted, I'm not using QT Pro, but for an "industry standard" movie player to fail so fundamentally at its only purpose, i.e., properly playing audio and video, on version 7.6.6 no less, is kind of epic.

I can't control what player clients will use. I can try rendering a WMV, but I think the client will be using Macs and would rather have Quicktimes.

This is devolving into a rare rant. I just can't believe QT is this bad. Anyone?

Just tried rendering with CBR. No effect on the audio sync problem.

The audio in my project is actually mixed - some music is 44.1, and the rest is 48k. My project settings and render settings are 48k. Everything however shows the 4 frame sync problem.

Any other suggestions on what I should do?

QT Sucks. Using or rendering to QT in Vegas is asking to be kicked in the nuts.

Render out a master file and use something like Handbreak to encore a QT file for whatever you need.

thanks william. What kind of master file?

And, I've been rendering mp4 files using the Main Concept AVC/AAC template. Does Handbreak render something similar?

For that matter, William, doesn't it seem the problem is with Quicktime itself? Unless my conclusion is wrong, Vegas is rendering a good mp4 which the Quicktime player is too dumb to read properly.

I rendered an uncompressed avi. The avi seems good, but it's 16 Gigs for 8.5 minutes. Is there really no better way than to create such a gigantic file? Is now the time to finally buy Cineform?

And from this massive 16 gig avi, I rendered an mp4 using Handbrake.

Bad news is, I still see the same kind of delay when using QT. There is no delay in VLC. Safe to conclude it's a Quicktime issue.

Good news is, the mp4 filesize generated by Handbrake is about 1/5 the filesize I was getting by rendering directly from Vegas. And the quality seems as good as the Vegas mp4, if not better.

Sync issue aside, am I using Handbrake right?

And is there a better (smaller!) master file I can render from Vegas other than an uncompressed avi?
