MP3 to WAV

hey guys
is there any freeware for converting mp3 files in itunes to wav files for better quality in fcp 6?

or better yet, in itunes if you control click there is an option to convert it to aac... is that a good quality file?

mp3 is a lossy format. Converting an mp3 to wav isn't going to magically get back the quality lost to the compression. Same goes for converting the mp3 to aac, you're not getting anything back if you're starting with a file that simply doesn't have the data you're after.

Really only reason to convert away from mp3 is that FCP does not import mp3.

Audacity can do it. Free app. AAC through iTunes is fine as well.

You can burn a CD, then drag those files back on your computer (or rip them of you're on a PC). I do that when I need to use music from my iTunes library in a video project.

That'll get you wav files, but nothing is going to recover the data tossed out during compression.

Actually it will get you AIFF files. THe reason to convert is that A) FCP hast to work hard enough on the video and if you stack compressed audio on top you are just asking for trouble. I do believe that with the current version you can drop an MP3 in the time line and it will play but is very unrecomended. And B) if your going to do and post audio (ie OMF your time line out to someone who actually does sound) then the MP3 will crap out the OMF and you will need to convert anyway.

Conversion options.
Audio Hub (discontinued but then put in open source)
MPEG Stream Clip (free and I believe it will do sound only clips)
iTunes (if you do the burn a CD route - and that could be a CD image)
Quick Time Pro (though the latest Quick Time Player doesn't seem to have a "Pro" mode so ...)
Compressor (if you have FCP you have Compressor)
SoundConverter and Dragoman will both do it but cost something, but not much.
And you can convert when you import into FCP (I think) You can bring them in and then batch export to convert.

The "uncompressed" file won't sound any better than the MP3 but you really need to do it for FCP.
