MP3 player suggestions....

I have a creative zen vison:M and I love it. I have tons of MP3s on there that are not handled by playsforsure so you can buy music directly. Creative provides firmware updates to keep up with any changes.

I have a subscription through Yahoo! music and pay 10.00 a month for unlimited downloads. The video quaility is better than the Ipod , imo.

Great Rok...if you had only chimed in yesterday....

Well thank you ladies and gents...due to the overwhelming responses (okay, final tally was only 6-4 in favor of the iPOD) to the iPOD, thats what I went with. I just bought a black 30 gig video ipod.

Terry, I thought I'd throw in the extra 50 bones for the higher download capability. I've got TONS of old CDS I'd love to get on there. Its going to be a long weekend project...

I also picked up a leather kick-stand case. I will probably never watch movies on it and wont need the kick-stand feature to prop it up but its all about planning for contingencies. Might as well spend an extra $6 bucks for a case that has a propping mechanism...

So, thank you all for weighing in. You all helped me make the decision. I appreciate it.

Rick
PS Umm, should I start another thread about iPOD accessories, ask about 'em here, or should we just kill this topic entirely?....)

Although I only read the first post, because I don't want to read through all of the other ones, I'd say:

FOR THE GYM:
Because you're going to a gym to work out, I'd say the 8gig nano, its small and you can velcro it on your arm and stuff.

Reasons to go with the big one: movies for planes and trains

Also Id go for an iPod because if you get the warranty that comes with it and just renew it, you can basically have a new ipod every three years. They pretty much give you a new one.

My opinion.

....

iPod was a good choice, it'll make it easier and why go with products that are only making up 30% combined of the entire digital music market?

One more thing: This confuses me so I am going to ask. Why is the 4gig nano going for $199.00 retail when the 30gig video ipod is going for $249.00 retail? Why wouldn't you just spend the extra $50 bucks? And is the nano so expensive for its size because you are paying for sleek?

The Nano uses flash memory instead of a hard drive. Makes them smaller, less power hungry, more resistant to shock, and pricier per gig.

SanDisk makes a good Nano alternative: the Sansa. It comes in around $100 cheaper then the Nano's gigabyte equivalant. It has a user replaceable battery (these batteries do become less and less effective over time), plays video, has a FM tuner, and coolest feature; it has a miniSD port so you can add more memory later.

The one thing that Ipod has that no one has improved on is it's simple and smart interface. Beyond that Ipods are overpriced in today's market, IMHO.

Cheers

I love my 80GB iPod. Not because it's Apple, but for the sheer joy of having every single song I like with me at all times. The video is a nice plus, but my Pocket PC phone is already doing most of that and more.

For the gym or just easy transport, try the Zen Nano (1GB). It takes only 1 AAA battery (alkaline or NiMH for recharging), has a backlit LCD, built-in FM radio, records the radio, memo recorder via built-in mic, 5-band EQ, and an input to capture audio streams from your CD player, PC, or whatever. It's currently 1GB for around $70 and it's very small and light. Perfect for the gym and more. It's not as fancy as the iRiver portable recorder/player, but I have no complaints.

I use it to record streams from my Sirius radio on-the-fly while I'm driving around.

By the way, who needs an iPhone when you have more space in a real iPod and more features and software in a PPC phone? I have 98% of it's built-in features, and tons of stuff it will never do.

Its just puzzling to be. As a non-mp3 owner, I just don't understand the big buzz towards the official iPOD? I don't get it. I don't understand the loyalty. So, I am not sure if I am missing something and that it is truly a great product or that since they've exploded on the scene they have become the standard and people are loyal?

rlm, I was a strong opponent of the iPod before I received one from my school when I started. Now, I would not buy anything else. I cannot tell you why I like it, or how it works. But, it works, its a flawless product. In fact, I have fallen so much in love with it, that I now carry all of my shorts that I have made with some raw footage on my 80 GB iPod that I just bought. and my 30 GB Pod, has just music on it. I love it. and am an official convert.

Can anyone here explain some actual features that they find the iPod has that are superior? Since the iPod heavily promotes DRM, I'm working on marketing other players that offer more freedom. If I could get a better idea as to why everyone is so attached to their iPods, it would make it much easier to combat.

So far, the only decent feature I see iPod having is the inteligent playlists. Is there anything else? And don't say "it looks cool" because that doesn't count.

I recently got the 30G video IPOD (U2 edition) as a gift and it goes everywhere I go. Iv'e come late to this and friends were kind enough to let me download from their libraries. I also listen to the best show on radio "This American Life" (free weekly downloads and a buck an episode from their catolog) on it a few times a week while shopping or at the gym. Essential for business trips.

While on the subject, I thought I would give a shameless plug for a close friends company. The iwrapr just won the "best of show" award at the Macworld expo. http://i2electronics.com/.

Bosindy -

a friend of mine turned me onto that Radio show and I thought the 2 of us were the only ones who listened to it. Its SO entertaining. I love it. It was the show that introduced me to David Sedaris, a phenomenal humorist/writer/reader. In fact, my girlfriend and I learned last August that he was going to be reading at The Bardavon near here in Poughkeepise on March 31st...and we snatched up a couple of tickets. We got them so early, we are row 5 baby! But I am WAAAY off the topic...

GenJerDan- if I hadn't already purchased an Ipod the other day, your link would have convinced me wholeheartedly. If someone ever asks me "what pair is better than, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Astaire and Rogers?", without a beat I would be able to answer "why the Ipod and poop of course".

Sure, only you and I and the rest who have clicked on your link would understand but thats okay...

Like ipod and poop baby, like ipod and poop...

The third act of a show titled "babysitting" absolutely floored me. I was driving from Boston to Philly late at night on Monday and it got a little dusty in the driver's seat. for those who don't know the show, a good place to start would be to go to the staff favorite at the bottom left. You will become addicted.

Not to TOTALLY hijack this thread but yes it is a great show. Ira Glass is a great host.

For those of you who are curious, its a show on NPR. Aside from the link bosindy posted, you can find it by googling NPR's website and using the dropdown box to search alphabetically for the show. Free streaming.

-The build quality is very nice
-Color LCD is a plus
-Video is well done
-DRM is not required obviously, since 99% of the files on my iPod are mp3's
that I made or acquired. Other devices don't really work with iTunes
and there is some good stuff on there that is worth getting.
However, I'm not a fan of the aac/m4p/m4a family of formats. They are
often encoded at a lower quality than my 192kbps mp3's which sound
very nice.
-iTunes is actually a very functional program with a nice interface. I like it much
better than Musicmatch Jukebox which I had to use with my 15GB Dell player.
-Album art is cool for reference
-Largest hard drive (80GB model) of all players --> huge selling point for me
-Looks cool (yeah, I know...)
-Songs can be assigned to specific EQ settings which are persistent. This is
really cool for that certain song that just doesn't sound right without a little
help from the EQ without having all of the songs use the same damn EQ setting.
-Search feature
-Simple PDA features are nice
-Games aren't bad
-Device is hackable - you can load other tools and FPS games like Doom

Well, I could go on and on. Can you tell that I like this bad boy?

My only gripe is that they should have used the bigger touch screen design in the current rev. This would really make the movie option much more useful since you could watch your movies in widescreen landscape mode.

Thank you, KingVidiot, you have been very helpful. I didn't know about the persistent EQ feature -- I can see how that would be nice.

You mentioned iTunes being a decent piece of software. Would you still use it if you had the ability to just drag and drop folders of songs onto the player?

Also, have you had any issues re-copying your songs back to your PC from the player? I have gotten inconsistent reports regarding that issue.

Well you can if you use Anapod Explorer (PC) and ignore iTunes altogether. My little Zen Nano acts like a USB stick where you can just copy and remove files at will. You can place them in folders to create playlists.

Without Anapod Explorer or some other hack, you can't directly copy your files from the iPod back to the PC.

There is supposedly some issue, which I haven't explored, where if you switch computers or re-image your computer you need to copy the Itunes library file back to regain all of your sync history and playlists on the computer side. Who knows?

I love the ipod, but i have to say that I am underwhelmed with the headset. Anyone know of a good replacement. Mine falls out all the time, didn't come with the little foam things and doesn't cut the outside noise well.
