Moving to Texas jitters.

Hi guys,

I've been in this community for a while now, and its part of my daily routine.
I'm about to turn a page in life, -again.

I'm about to move to US in six months and join my wife who's in Texas and it kinda blows my mind to leave my comfort zone.
I pretty much dominate the small pond I am in right now but being with family seems like the right decision.

So now I have no one in the video community to turn to but here, DVXuser has pretty much been one of my daily stress reliever.

Questions pop into my mind, like, will I be ok in a new environment and such. I also noticed a lot of forum members are from Texas so maybe getting some encouraging words can help soothe the jitters.

sigh... sorry for the rant.. just jittery.

Stephen,

My wife lives in Allen cuz she works in Dallas. I told her about how Austin is pretty much where filmaking is and shes ok if we can check it out. But I'm not yet fixed on it. So for now we'll be in the Dallas area. -unless theres a compelling reason to move elsewhere.

I can't really say much about the filmmaking community there, but I know there are quite a few DVXUsers in Dallas as well. And you're only a few hours drive from Austin. :D

Thanks.
Hmm, I guess i can test the waters without uprooting my wife from where she is.

whew... psyching myself up for this move is driving me nuts.
It does help that a lot of you guys that I'm familiar with in these forums are from Texas.

Texas was really cool. I don't know how nice it is where you live now... but Texas seemed to be a dramatic improvement over STL.

It made my short-list for where I expect to end up.

Thats encouraging to know Matt. Did you stay in Texas long? Which part did you stay in? And out of curiosity Matt, where did you guys shoot the verse? Was that in Texas?

Dallas has a great filmmaking community as far as I can tell. Sign up for yahoo list called "dan's list" (dan eggleston) and you'll get great work all over the place. The other list to sign up for is www.shortfilmtexas.com. And ya. Austin is right down the road.

Good luck on the move!

Texas is a pretty cool state with lots of landmarks and abundance of territorial pride.. And... F'nA... it's hotter than sh*t for the most of the year.

Don't worry about the heat Edgen, it couldn't be too far from where I'm coming from. ;-)

The Dallas area got off to a great film-centre start a few decades ago when they jump-started the Las Colinas community with some tax breaks. After the tax breaks expired, the life of the film industry faded a bit, but is starting to re-vitalize now as the politicians realize that aggressive moves from Arizona, New Mexico, and even Louisiana have made inroads into the biz. Las Colinas has some great facilities, but most of the perks end up in Austin because that's where the political power is. When you get here, connect with the Texas Film commission, they publish a sheet that usually has a fair amount of opportunities.
I'm in sleepy little East Texas and although we don't have much here, initiatives are under way to try and make it happen. I'm chairman of a film group that is backed by the city, our motto is "Talent goes where the action is." We're in the earliest baby stages of our plans, but cool things will eventually happen here.
As for the heat....it's the humidity that will kill you. In the summer, moist air running up from the gulf hits a high pressure system that sits here for about seven months, has no where to go. We say "Yes, but it's a WET heat..." Even the early 90's is miserable, the mold count goes thru the roof. Welcome to Texas.....

Thanks Stephen, I'm also the head film the videography sector in my community in my home country. Hope to be in touch with you guys when I'm there. My career here is mostly built on commercials/corporate and just beginning to skim the surface of narrative filmaking.

My island is where John Sayles just wrapped his latest film "Amigo" last year.
