Moving to NYC

So I'm thinking about moving to NYC. For anybody that lives there, used to live there, or knows people that do, what's the best area to live? I'd probably be in Brooklyn a lot as pretty much all the major TV/Film studios (Broadway Stages, Silvercup, and Steiner) are there. Would like to keep rent at or below $1600 a month (including water). And if anybody knows what would electric and gas roughly run? Cable/Internet would run about $100.

Gas was cheap usually less than $20/mo total for myself and two other roommates. Electric ended up being $60 each or so.

$1600 is fine if you want to live alone, you should be able to get a 1BR for around $1400 in Brooklyn or Queens. Queens off the 7 train is probably the best bet in terms of price, and quick mass transit. I lived in Greenpoint Brooklyn for ten years and loved it, but since it's been encroached by "hip" williamsburgh the rent prices have gone up.
