Moving to Brooklyn In A Few Months!

There was a thread like this from another DVXuser I wanna say... a year or two ago, but now I'm finally looking towards making the move myself in about 6-7 months. To say the least, my income has stabilized, and I'm currently considering where to go. I know there's plenty of people here in Brooklyn with advice to give, but I want to do my research ahead of time. I'm shooting a bit low here for something around $1400-$1500 tops, which I know won't get me much, but I hope it's realistic.

Oh wait, should I even bother with Craigslist?

Thanks as always, guys.

Good luck! In my experience finding an apt via craigslist in Brooklyn was mostly a waste of time. We usually ended up looking at overpriced dumps, and after awhile we just bit the bullet and went to a broker and paid the exhorbitant brokers fee.
What parts of Brooklyn are you looking in? I lived in Greenpoint for ten years, and sadly if I stayed in NYC I would likely have been priced out of the neighborhood eventually.

I used to live in Astoria as well, which is a nice enough neighborhood and $1400 goes a little bit further there, since it's not a "hip" area.

So far Bay Ridge and the southern parts of Park Slope. I'm completely adamant on staying away Williamsburg and the like, but I'd love a bit of youth if possible.

As for Astoria, I find the neighborhood to be great, but I have not fallen in love with it! A broker's fee is fine in the long run if it means a better place. I honestly have no idea where to start though, since it seems a lot of websites tend to list duplicates of the same listing (I'm guessing they just reuse the pics for multiple apartments), which puts me off a bit.

Bay Ridge you will be fine, and Park Slope you can find the right deal. The only big broker I would stay away from are Apartments and Lofts dot com, I know friends that had some bad dealings with them in the past. But generally I'd look at what neighborhood you want, and find a realty company in the neighborhood. You might want to look into Fort Greene as well, some deals can be had, and you're right by BAM, which is one of the best theaters in NYC to see a movie!
