Moving Stuff from 1TB to another 1TB

Hey guys
I have a 1TB external with a ton of stuff on it, but it is FAT32 formatted. So, I need to change that to MAC journaled or non journaled- still not sure of the difference. I know the easiest way would be to buy another 1TB and format that one to MAC and then move everything over to it, but then I am stuck with a 1TB that I don't need right now, which I guess, I could then format mine to MAC and move everything back to it and return the other one back to Wal-Mart for a refund, but is there a better/more ethical way of going about this endeavor?
thanks

So should we assume that you don't have any extra temporary space to keep your content while you re-format? Can you borrow some space from a friend? If you have high-speed internet service, you could rent some space online to keep the files temporarily. (Might not be a bad idea to have a backup anyway.)

OTOH, are you assuming that you will never need another 1TB of disk space? I wouldn't bet on that.

as i see it (and someone correct me if im wrong) mac extened journaled would be for your Mac Hardrive with the OS on it. for data only drives and for best speed performance you should use only "mac extended" and leave the journaled "off". if you had journaled on for your external it would not perform as fast. intended specifically for your main mac. i believe there are better protections and intelligence when using journaled. at least thats roughly what i remember. im sure someone here can improve on my input.

yeah, i hopefully can borrow from a friend. i know i will need that TB later but right now i need all the money i can to put toward my thesis project... by the time i need another TB they will be cheaper i assume than they already are...
oh and now, i just don't have any room anywhere else, hoping for a friend to come thru for me i guess
