Moving in the night - alternative to 'trendy' torch spotlight??!

I'm going to be following a character at night - pitch black - no street lights or anything, and was trying to think of an abstract way to portably light the subject whilst moving but avoiding the over used torch party kinda light??! I don't think there are many alternatives are there?? I was thinking of planting the light on the subject instead of it coming from the camera... i don't know.... Can anyone come up with other ideas.. anything really.. a bit of inspiration is needed.. thanks

I'm not following you on "torch party light"- are you referring to a flashlight held by the character? If the scene is strictly no light "source", then I might try either giving soft rim light and a large, soft eyelight from the front possibly mounted on camera, or backlight some light haze to achieve a silhouette.

I have used the boom pole effect too and think it gives really interesting and different rsults.

I think a china ball is the best way.

I also don't know of this trendy torch thing, what do you mean?

My guess is he's referring to the talent 'waving' a torch everywhere lighting parts of the compostion up at different times = 'trendy' maybe? :D

Cast an angel in the lead role. Their halo should give you a nice permanent ring light.

Excuse me Barry, who ever you think you are... here at DVXUSER.com we try to answer with constructive answers, hahahaha. But really, just cast an angel, will be much easier.

If you can justify your actor wearing some kind of space helmet you can light his face from the inside of the helmet. They do it in every scifi movie, but if you think about it it's very unrealistic to light the inside of a helmet - the person wearing it won't see a thing. The average viewer doesn't seem to care though.

Other than that I think any kind of lighting on the actor himself will look extremely unrealistic, like an alien out of x-files or something ;)
