Movies in development hell

im sure dark tower will somehow turn out awful, but i will still watch just cause i wanna see what they do with it. ditto the IT remake I think i heard about.

Just a pet peeve -- if an article is 15 pages long and doesn't have an option to view in one (or at least fewer) pages, then I don't read it anymore. Spreading it out over many pages just to increase clicks is a fantastic way to be hateful to your readership.

I don't disagree. Still, it's a good list.

The Tourist is a science-fiction screenplay that’s been making the rounds since 1980. Written by Clair Noto, the script initially caught the attention of Quadrophenia director Franc Roddam along with well-known production designer HR Giger. The website

Ever since No Country for Old Men swept the Academy Awards for the Coen brothers, Cormac McCarthy’s fiction has been hot property.

Some of those seem like playing with fire. A big fanbase with lots of expectations. I can only imagine that doesn't help.

I've seen concept art for BioShock. Looked to be pretty true to the visuals of the game, which is 90% of its appeal.

Hellboy 3 is a no brainer, but the director just doesn't have time for it with all the other projects he is doing, and Ron Perlman isn't getting any younger.

Good Omens would be such a great, or terrible movie depending on who handled it. Too bad Terry Gilliam likely won't get the chance again.

Just read that Bryan Singer is directing The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. While not as unfilmable as Stranger in a Strange Land (which just shouldn't be tried), I can't imagine a couple of hours will do that book anything approaching justice.

Damn, and I wanted to be the one who adapted that... I hope, most likely in vain... it will be shot for 'R'...

As for 'not filmable'... I've not had a problem with many of the recent Live Action + CGI adaptations of various 'unfilmable' novels. I'd probably like a SISL adaptation. Heck, I even liked the first "Chronicles of Narnia"... the later ones suffered from poor script as well as lowered budget...

Of course there is "Battlefield Earth"(2000), but I think that may have suffered from too much 'fan' input and control... and I've never read the source material anyway...

It's been a long long time since I read Stranger in a Strange land. Nothing is unfilmable after Avatar and Jurassic Park. You just need a good scrip.

I really really hope 'At The Mountains of Madness' gets made! Reading The Case of Charles Dexter Ward right now. Wanna see that one too.
Love the visuals of Bioshock. Would like to see that too.

Last thing I wanna see is another Stephen King adaption. Or book.

I don't know why no one has done a really good Lovecraft movie, although the books move kinda slow and I think a scrip would have to move a lot faster. Hellboy has a lot of Lovecraft influence and I liked those movies.

Yes, it's a bit of a mystery. Maybe they need quite a lot of adaption and re-arrangement as they usually don't follow a typical movie dramaturgy.
If someone wants to throw some money my way, I'd be happy to give "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" a go :D

It's not a question of FX. It's a question of being able to do the book justice in a feature-film medium. The FX for Stranger would be easy. The themes and complexity of the story, not so much.

Speaking of Stranger in a Strange Land, which may not be well suited for a 2-3hr script, do you think that with the newly discovered viewer stamina for visual narrative, a-la Netflix binge-watching of entire seasons 4-8hrs at a time, can this bleed into the feature-film world? Say, longer films? Multiple arcs? I'm not talking just replicate episodic formats, either. Perhaps Stranger in a Strange Land could be an epic 5hr movie!!! Haha :)

The difference is the full 9.3 hours of LotR weren't released as a single piece to be watched all the way through in one sitting.

Ive never gotten into the trilogy, but even if I did, I personally couldn't sit for 9hrs. However, I know lots of people would.

Regardless of the specifics, my point was to bring up something I personally haven't heard much talk about...although maybe others have. That is, that lots and lots of peoe spend hours and hours binge watching Netflix and such, simply because the full seasons of shows are now available to be watched all the way through...which makes me wonder if this viewership stamina might play into the way feature films may be conceived and released in the future.

But ok, perhaps Stranger in a Strange Land could be done justice by a 9.3hr trilogy. I understand the challenges of turning a novel I to a film is not only to do with time and images...but in this case, I think it could benefit from the extended duration. Imagine the fun you could have just in the Church of All Worlds's scenes

Of course, it may not make financial sense, but that's not the only consideration
