Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
hey guys, i wanna make a movie soon, 30-45 minutes. But my fear: losing all my fotoage when im half way or close to being finished the production. I have a 500 gig external, so i have no worries of running out of space. My scratch disks are set on my external with final cut, so when i capture, it goes righ tinto an untitled folder (i name it) in my external. My external recently crashed for NO REASON at all.....should iburn my footage to a disc lets say every 2 gigs of footage i get?

thanks

Noah is right, if it's something you don't want to lose, always...ALWAYS back it up to at least two drives at a bare minimum.

It's unfortunately a fact of life that just like taxes, you're hard drive will die. It might be in a month it might be in 5 years, but it will inevitable and always die. Warranties do not cover what footage is on the hard drive... only the replacement of the drive. DVDs are at least a stop gap as a backup, but even those can go "bad". Always use good media...not the cheapo stuff.

This is a downside about shooting digitally and not having a tape backup. Do NOT trust your hard drive because inevitably the one time you'll need it, it won't be there.

If you're going to be bringing your footage in at full resolution, and not be doing an offline/online workflow, burning to DVD will kill you. SD footage at the DV codec is 13GB/hour I believe and HD ad DVCPro HD is ~25GB/hour I think. So if you're finished piece is going to be 45 mins, you'll have quite a few hours of raw footage I imagine. Unless you have an assistant that you want to punish and have burn DVDs all night I wouldn't go that route.

Hard drive space is cheap, get more drives. As mentioned, if really concerned, get a second set of hard drives to back up to. You can always build external units yourself. Just buy a generic casing and put in some good quality drives like some Hitachi's or Seagates.

cheers.
