Movie Poster - "The Bad Cat"

We are about to enter two short films into some festivals, as well as release them on DVD.

Here is the poster for the first film, "The Bad Cat", it is a black comedy.

I would love to know what you think of it.

Thanks a lot,

Chris

Looks good Chris. I would add a cat though. Something ala Alice in Wonderland like a cheshire cat would be sweet.

although it's kind of cool, and I'm sure it makes sense in the movie, it's a confusing poster. you have these popsicle sticks in a cross with a title that implies a mischeivous cat is involved. It doesn't go together. I look at this and it in no way makes me want to see this movie.

sure you want to create some intrigue, but not at the expense of confusing your potential audience. I don't know if there's a cat actually involved, but if there is, I definitely think it should be on the poster. tell me what I'm about to see. just my constructive criticism.

Pookie, that's really cool what you did with the poster. I like that a lot.

Actually, that's exactly what it is. The story is about a mischievous cat that is killing all the other pets in the house and the little girl who puts a stop to it.

not too sure.... do you have a quick trailer for it so we can get an idea of the overall feel for the movie?
There is no trailer (the movie is only 6 minutes long. :)). However, there are stills and the script up at : http://www.offstagefilms.com/Cat.htm.

We thought about putting paw prints on the poster, but in the end we thought this was more compelling. Maybe not. :(

Chris

How about a couple different versions? I think paw prints or maybe even a picture of a cat would help. Or a picture of the cat and the girl, kind of like those pink panther cartoons.

Isaac,

That's an interesting idea. We will have to play with that - perhaps a pink cutout of the girl and the cat.

Thanks,

Chris

Paw prints are definitely a good idea. Not only would it tie in the cat idea, but it would help spice up some of the empty space in the poster.

Otherwise, it's pretty cool.

Sweet, I like the broken cross but I also like the paw prints idea.

Horizon a little higher, cross a little shorter. Human shoe prints and paw prints approaching the cross together.

Paw prints stop at the cross, human prints continue over the horizon (or into space, in white) Credits up and to the left.

My two cents. I am no filmmaker but I can be found in the audience.

BTW - doesn't this give the end away, or is there a twist?

If the cat kills the other pets, could each have a cross with a collar or other pet things hanging off it. To demonstrate a comedy, maybe the cat sitting behind them with a photoshop smile? Maybe spoof the "Shallow Grave" poster, but with a child's plastic spade??

The problem with the existing one is that it says little about the film - Therefore it didn't interest me - just my opinion though.

Thanks everyone for the great advice.

I should probably explain a little better how we actually will use the poster. The film is a short (about 6 minutes) and while we will print a few posters (11 x 17) to give to the cast and crew, we will actually print a ton of postcards which we will use to invite people to the shows and pass out at festivals. So we are not looking for a 100% typical one sheet look. Just something professional and intriguing enough that people might check us out.

That being said, I still think most of your suggestions are right on target and we are always looking to improve our design work.

Thanks again,

Chris

p.s. pookie - you've got some serious skills. Do you do graphics work for a living?
