Movie Poster Help...

Hey guys,

My name is Brock Smith, i'm a 21 year old filmmaker and i've just begin production on a short film i'm making. It's about a hitman. Here are my initial ideas for it and i was wondering if anyone could help me out with suggestions or I could even send the photoshop file if anybody would be interested in taking a stab at it. I got rights to the pictures used so that was a start. Here they are:

Brock - I'm digging the grunge! I like the polaroids and how you made them interesting with the blood and the rips.

Prod - Very good write up on that post!

Thanks Zumez,

I don't have many production stills yet... Do you think that i should scrap these and go with photos?

Brock -

I dig most of what you've done. I'm usually not one to criticize one's creative work, and I don't think this applies. I like the grunge within the "Fatal Effect" text, but I would lower the opacity of said grunge inside the text. The font gets lost as there is a lot of dark subjects surrounding it.

I look forward to seeing some updates.

The grunge text is a mess. The edges of the letters have a clean black stroke around them which ruins the effect. Distressed text shouldn't have clean edges. Try a layer mask using your grunge texture, this will break up the edges. Paint (dodge & burn) on the mask to control the weathering of the image.

Overall, it is a solid first draft. However, you may want to consider the following:

1.) The "logic" of the blood splatter needs to be consistent and justifed. The blood on the tape is rezzed out and appears to be a random pattern...I'm not sure what caused it. The splatter on the upper left photograph is at different scales, different splatter-patterns and different translucency...for that to happen at least three separate "splatter incidents" had to occur, which is highly unrealistic.

2.) Why would someone leave two separate finger prints, close together and parallel to each other, on the upper right photo?

3.) Why do some photos have tape and others have a paperclip? What's the paperclip holding the photos onto other than empty space?

4.) The grunge background is interesting but unjustified. What's the logic behind it, other than being "messy?"

5.) I disagree that a grungy typeface can't have a black outline. However, I do agree that there are problems. You use three separate typefaces for this poster and they have no relation to each other. The bottom typeface is so thin it is difficult to read. The font effects you apply are different for each chunk of type. The result is the text feels sloppy, unfocused and without a clear visual message. Also, typefaces almost always need minor alterations...the "a" in "fatal" is so tough to read that you should extend the upper curved arm of the "a" to increase legibility. Just grab a chunk from the bottom of the "e" in defect. Lastly, your kerning is inconsistent...the result is it feels like text that was quickly slapped together in photoshop. It doesn't have the polish one would expect from a top notch graphic designer.

Despite these critiques, it is a good start. Truly. It's a rough idea of what can become a great poster if you continue to redraft it.

Hey i really appreciate you guys giving me all these tips. I'm not by any means anywhere close to competent in photoshop. This is my first time i've started from scratch on something and just created a photo using other brushes/photos. I will definately take your suggestions to heart but was curious if anybody here would be willing to spend an hour with it. I can send the photoshop file/source files. You could put your name on the photo with full credit. I'm just SUPER busy into production right now and don't have time to spend messing with it. If anybody is interested PM me and let me know. If not, i will come back to this in a month after production is done. Again, thank you all greatly for your suggestions. I really do appreciate it.

Best Regards,

~Brock~
