Hello,

I know this isn't about any specific movie, but does anybody know of a website that has information about the movie experience in the 30's and 40's (possibly 50's also). What I need to know is what exactly was played at the theaters. You had your news reel, cartoon or serial, and then your feature.

Thanks,
mike

That sounds about right, but there were many changes in the 30s and 40s to how movie theaters operated. There were some massive theaters with full orchestras and live performances in the 1920s, but sound and the great depression pretty much ended this. Newsreels and animated shorts still existed, though. Serials lost a lot of popularity after the feature film became the norm, although they enjoyed some success in 1920s France, I believe, and became popular much later in the US. This is all I can think of off the top of my head, I can look up more if you want, though.

I recommend this, book, by the way. I'm taking a course with it as one of the textbooks and it's insanely comprehensive:

I think the advent of television did a lot to end the popularity of the serial.
