Movie 43

This one passed under the radar for me. Didn't really hear about it then just happened to catch on the list on NEtflix.

It's stupid, irreverent, often gross, silly, but it was also hilarious.

Rotten Tomatoes said it stinks, so I guess my sense of humor is very different from the folks that rate movies on RT.

I didn't much care for it. However, the end skit with Terrance Howard as the basketball coach was quite funny.

I thought it was a 'great' parody movie... given the pro crew and cast. However, at the time "The Groove Tube"(1974), was far more 'funny' to me, far less 'pro' production values, but has not aged particularly well.

I've been wondering who would take on the mantel that seems to be left hanging on the hook of 'parodist/satirist', since people like Mel Brooks have 'retired', or the late Leslie Nielson...

Who are the current people like this...

The Farrelly brothers, who've been doing this since Dumb & Dumber, and ran the show on this flick.

Some of the skits were obnoxiously unfunny, while others had me laughing hysterically. The running meta-story with Quaid was entertaining as well. The Watts-Schreiber-White "Homeschooled" skit was by far my favorite, but I might be biased on that front, having been homeschooled myself (you'd think that would make me hate it, ha).

Overall, it's not a movie I'd recommend to pretty much anyone, except maybe people who enjoyed MacGruber (like I did), which had a similar kind of, um... throat-ripping humor. <grin>

Don't even put this in the ballpark as Groove Tube. By inventing and defining the genre (it started as video clips shown during a live comedy club show), that movie was a real pioneer. Only some British shows before it such as Monty Python's Flying Circus and the work of Dudley Moore & Peter Cook and then later productions like The Kentucky Fried Movie and Saturday Night Live really contributed to the canon.

Movie 43 belongs in the trenches with should-have-been-direct-to-video productions like Amazon Women on the Moon. By comparison, Groove Tube is Shakespeare.

Like most I found myself laughing at some of the skits and some I thought were bad. If they took out about 2 or 3 skits this could of been something good. My favorite 3 would have to be the Hugh Jackman, the home schooled skit and the last one with the cat.

But it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was shock to see all these A-list doing all these crazy things. That Halle Berry Skit was the worst in my opinion.
