Movi v Defy v BeSteady v Rock-Steadi - Are there others? What's the difference?

Most of the gimbals are the same at least on the effect. The most cost effective rig is the Squirrel. They have 3 models, one for Red/Blackmagic then one for DSLR which is identical to Movi and a lighter model for GH3 and NEX etc... I have compared them side-by-side with Movi and both gets extremely good results. So for the price diferences the Squirrel is the way to go.... They have multirotor versions for each one so they can be easily changed from handheld to multirotor in 5 mns.

Never heard of this this one as well, are you sure about the name?

I am sure about the name...There is no website for it still. It is a new brand that has been sold unbranded until now. I wll post photos on Monday and will post some footage shot with it....If you have any question please e-mail polycordfilmworks@gmail.com
It is beeing sold all over the world so it won´t be difficult to get hold of one. (if stocks are available ;-) )

Do you know where it is made?
I'm currently in China, and looking to maybe get a deal on something manufactured here.
What's the best Chinese manufactured quad or octo copter?

DJI is probably the best from China. They make a basic quad (Phantom) designed to carry the GoPro which is RTR (without camera) for about $700 all the way to the S800 Evo which is a hexa and can carry the Zenmuse 3 axis brushless gimbal that will carry a GH3. To date they have not made an octo, at least for public sale.

There are also kits within that range that vary in size and price depending on how you want to fly and how much weight you want to carry.

All the models have different software and "feel" - also if you show up with a Movi, and it causes problems and delays, people might get upset, but not nearly as upset as if you show up with an off-brand clone, and these same problems occur - then you will be yelled at for attempting to use cheap crap, and personally blamed for any issues.

i would like to repeat, lest any producers are reading this, that a Movi-type device is only a replacement for Steadicam if you are an idiot. The two devices have completely different uses and will result in shots that look very different from each other - with much less overlap than most people think.

Word.

Could you please elaborate? I have to admit im not confortable in seeing the difference and some examples will be actualy welcomed...

Thanks

yes, i wonder too,
but i see the difference, because i see the shots that can be done with the gimbal only, and not with steadicam, unless you fly MK-V AR, but i can't see any steadicam shot that gimbal is not capable of;
even heavy, or 3D rigs can be acomodated with easyrig type setup

I want to say this: I have not seen “demo” footage anywhere from any system where I thought these systems were some be all and end all piece of gear, many flaws to be seen across the board. In saying that, for a job last month I went ahead and hired a M10 and operator for the day as I thought it was the right choice - and the shots I designed couldn’t be done any other way. The operator in this case was my insurance that he’d know how to set the system optimally and we’d be shooting instead of fiddling. Theres much fiddling to be done if you don’t know the system FWIW. NEVER turn up with an M10 dry hire and expect to be up and running quickly. Then there’s many a fine adjustment that may be required for different shots through out the day.

TO fly the system, I had the movi operator, remote focus puller and control operator - to be honest I found the best results when the camera was operated in Majestic mode aka no remote operation apart from focus and I quickly realised why I wasn’t seeing a lot shots where this was the case. I was able to get great shots from the movi... with a professional steadicam operator who’d spent a lot of time with the system, with a tolerant focus puller who was judging feet all day...

FWIW the movi (and other their brethren systems) let you do things like ultra smooth hand offs which steadicam / dolly etc are incapable of, but it’s just another piece of gear to be utilised when appropriate. However Im thinking we should all prepare for 12 months where its over use will only serve to annoy some people a little. Bring on 2014, the year of the running camera.

Steadicam,

Stabilised PTR, XYZ
Operator controls PTR, XYZ
Typically 4foot deep and cannot be more than three foot from the operator

Movi
Stabilised PTR
PTR controlled by software or second op
XYZ - not stabilised at all
2foot deep

Basically movis you are going to see footsteps and poor control of headroom and side to side jig

Advantage is low operator skill, (or shorter curve to 75% good) and ability to go through a 2 foot hole.. all at the loss of a lot of fine control, all XYZ stabilisation and a load of easy break electronics..

Worked with the dudes from Defy today and yesterday with a G5 rig with the Canon 1DC.

I was not a big believer in any of this systems before, but I am now, and will probably be budgeting for a G10 when they come out.

ETA and there were several scenes where we did hand-offs that would be impossible for a steadicam to do.

What the g10 is supposed to have that the G5 do not? To support camera up to the Epic?
Have you tried the movi before? Could you think an average camera operator be able to use a Defi or Movi rig with relative success by how own with relative patience and moderate self training by self experimentation?

thanks

G10 will support an Epic and I will be getting one.

Like anything you will have to train with it before taking paid gigs. There is a learning curve but if you practice it is easy.

I will probably get another Easy Rig for longer takes.

Just thought I'd share a few shots from the DEFY G2 I got recently. Pretty straightforward setup and quick to balance. Feels easier to get immediate gratification from it vs. a steadycam setup which takes real skill, patience and experience. Still practicing and figuring out proper technique for different shots. Used it on a couple of jobs already and clients were pleased. Gotta say that customer service from DEFY crew was top notch in my personal experience. They were always stoked to help out and answer any questions I had. And even sent over multiple personalized video tutorials to assist in getting up and running quickly. That level of service is huge in my book.

All sorts of great moves in that one. I really like my G5 and yes, the Defy team is very helpful.
