Movecam Mattebox MM1

I saw one over at Bandpro, in Burbank. The construction was really high quality and overall I had a very favorable impression of it. The swing away was rock solid, as was everything else. In terms of ergonomics it's a traditional design and in the short time that I handled it I did not notice any surprises. The size is about average.

I'm currently in the market for a mattebox and so far the Movcam is leading the pack at this price point. Other contenders are the Elite from Genustech and the Redrock unit, but I think it's going to be the MM2 for me.

Overall I was very impressed with the gear from Movcam and ended up buying their MF-1 follow focus. Bandpro had the newest version of this unit with the redesigned stops. On the first generation of the MF-1 setting the stops was a confusing affair, but Movcam went back and redesigned them to work in a similar fashion to what you would find on an Arri. I ended up buying the new model and it's a really nice unit.

Redrock is a poor mattebox.
Used it numerous times and heard non-stop complaints about it. I hop this is much better.
The MM1 seems to be good for me. The MM3 I believe?... which has the additional filter tray seems awesome to have, along with the top cheeseplate, but for an extra $1000, its not worth it, especially since it comes with 19mm studio adapters, and I definitely wont be using those.

I saw the Redrock today and really did not like the way the knobs felt.

Just be aware that there seem to be a few sub variants of the various MM models. As an example some models can take 138mm round filters in the rear via an optional ring. I found about this accidentally while speaking to a salesperson.

Good stuff. I'm going for one of the MM models.

I picked up this kit from b&h when I was setting up my AF100 rig

the mattebox is pretty solid and it came with a nuns knickers as opposed to the foam donuts some kits come with. I haven't had any solid experiences yet but upon initial impressions, I think it was worth the buy.

The baseplate though, I like how it's adjustable but I feel it sits too high when attached to a tripod. But the construction is pretty solid just like the mattebox and the price point is definitely something to consider when kitting up your rig.

I would look for some negative comments though before getting one, because frankly it scares me that no one has ever said anything bad about it!

I've seen it in person finally, played around with it, and loved it.
I havent had the chance to use it to its fullest, such as putting in the large NDs as none were available, but other than that, this think was amazing. Much better than the redrock one I compared to.
This things awesome and not bad of a price!
